Metamorphosis

Earthenware ceramic, smoke, carbon. Kilkenny, Ireland. 2017.

Smoke firing is a technique used by ceramic artists which utilises the elements of fire, water, air, and earth to produce organic patterns on a ceramic body. The markings on this piece come from objects found in my late sister's studio. These objects were of great of significance to her and brought fond, yet painful memories. Fire is a transformative element. And for me, this burning symbolises the transmutation of energy and the letting go of attachment to these objects.

The work was made for, and exhibited at Memory Box, the Latvia International Ceramics Biennial, Daugavpils, Latvia. 2017.
