What Are You Made of Tartu?

What Are You Made of Tartu?

Social media campaign and printed postcards. Comissioned by Magic Carpets EU for Superorganism exhibition, Tartu, Estonia, August 2024.

What Are You Made of Tartu? is an iteration of a project initially developed for SALT Festival in Folkstone, UK in 2020. Here, it has been reimagined for exhibition at Superorganism in Tartu, Estonia.

Every urban centre develops its own personality and characteristics as it grows over time. Every city is formed by the ongoing actions of its inhabitants and events that occur there by humans, non-humans and natural forces. These forces and actions leave traces from the past as building blocks for the future, and over time they integrate, giving each city a unique personality and identity.

The people of Tartu were asked to to share on social media their images of a material, feature or natural phenomenon that they think is meaningful to the city and has helped shape its character. These images were gathered and shared inline via instagram to become part of a collection which will be a lasting visual library that will showcase the uniqueness of the city of Tartu, using the hashtag #whatareyoumadeofTartu?

During the exhibition period, postcards with a selection of the photos submitted were printed and exhibited in Apparatidehaas alongside other Magic Carpets projects. These postcards we free to take by attendees as a souvenir of this unique city and the project itself.
